About Anthony D. Griffin

Anthony D. Griffin

Anthony Dave Griffin – Citadel Class of 1974

Upon graduation from the Citadel, Anthony was commissioned an Ensign and was sent to Navy SEAL training. After his time in the SEAL’s, Anthony became a member of the Navy's parachute demonstration team, the "Shooting Stars", before attending flight school. After graduating flight school, he was awarded his Navy Wings of Gold and was sent to NAS Oceana as an F-14 Tomcat pilot.

While returning from a night training flight in 1982, Anthony's fighter experienced a dual engine flameout. He was unable to restart the engines. Anthony elected to stay with the aircraft until the last second because he was over a densely populated area of Virginia Beach. He successfully ensured that his aircraft crashed away from the city but was killed when attempting to eject.

Thanks to W. Keith Midgette '76 for a more detailed accounting of Anthony’s career after the Citadel. If anyone has additional information, please pass it on. Also, we are looking for a picture of Anthony from his senior yearbook. Please email us at administrator@summerallguards.com if you can provide a picture.
